Do It Scared

Updated: May 10, 2020

When it comes to anything in life and new beginnings, we often don’t know where to start. We want everything to be perfect before taking the plunge. We feel that we need to know the ins and outs of what it is that we are about to embark on. But can I be frank with you? Regardless of what it is that you want to do, you have to be willing to accept the fact that you’re not going to know everything. Nothing is ever perfect. And you’re always going to be afraid of something. Which is why you have to be willing to do it scared. Be accepting that you’re not going to have all the answers and just START.

You aren’t going to regret moving towards your goals. You’re only ever going to regret the time that you wasted putting your goals off. Putting yourself off. You’re going to regret saying “I’ll start tomorrow” or “Monday.” The thing is, tomorrow is no guarantee, but today is. Today is the perfect day to start. And wouldn’t you say that you’re deserving of the life you’ve only dreamt of? To feel absolutely amazing and to be undeniably happy? Because you can.

When I started my health and fitness journey, I didn’t have a plan or course of action. All I knew was that I needed to start moving, and that’s what I did. I ordered a random workout program off an infomercial back in 2012, and I just started. I didn’t have any ideal or expectations of how I would look or feel by the end of it. I had no goals in mind other than to start moving. But from just merely starting I was able to devise a plan over time and have since formed and built new habits and larger goals.

This blog is a perfect example of doing it scared. For the longest time, I’ve been thinking about creating content, but fear has been the thing holding me back. So, I decided to let go of all expectations. To embrace the fact that this is going to be far from perfect, and that I will only get better at this with time. That perhaps I can improve on my vocabulary and grammar. Maybe no one is going to read this. Maybe one person will take something away from this. But, what am I gaining at the end by continually allowing my fear to win? The feeling of inadequacy and being incomplete.

Constant wishing. Dreaming. Visualizing all of the things that I want in my life, and feeling crummy because I continuously allow my fear to hold me back. Which is the perfect reason to do it scared. Because ultimately, it’s better to put yourself out there – to step into the unknown – than to continually be yearning for something.

By taking the smallest of steps, you can slowly start to map out a plan – a course of action – and get a better sense of how to do things. You’ll learn and grow as a result, and be happier for it. Do don’t allow your fear to hold you back any longer. Embrace your fear and do it scared anyways.

Don't wait until you're not scared to do the thing that you want to do. Do it scared.
